The construction of Neumayer Station III on the Ekstrom Ice Shelf in the Antarctic is one of the most ambitious projects in German Polar Research. A third construction phase has just begun - the aim is to inaugurate the new station by February 2009. Neumayer III will replace Neumayer II, a research station built in 1992 in the same location, but already sunk twelve meters deep into the ice. With its modern standards and state-of-the-art technology, Neumayer III will enable the continuation of long-term measurements by the scientific observatories for meteorology, geophysics and atmospheric chemistry stationed there.
